Although the iPhone was intended to be used on the AT&T network it is also possible to use it on the T-Mobile network. The advantages to being on T-Mobile is that the plans are cheaper and if you have better service with T-Mobile it is advantageous as well.
To get the phone working of course first you have to unlock it. This will allow the T-Mobile SIM card to work in the iPhone because by default the phone is locked to the AT&T network. This is a fairly easy process.
Once unlocked, you need to input settings that will allow you to make and receive calls with the iPhone as well as access the internet and MMS.
I personally use the iPhone 2g OS 3.0 since the iphone 2g is generally cheaper and you will only be able to use the edge network and not 3g anyway so there is really no point in purchasing the more expensive iPhones except that they are more current technology.
I have used both blackberry’s and my iPhone 2g and I believe that the iPhone is a superior phone to use with T-Mobile. The settings, including internet2.tmobile.com as well as internet2.voicestream.com and wap.voicestream.com can be used to get the phone set up and compatible with the network. The APN settings will need to be correct and enable MMS can be found through Cydia which will assist in this process.
All in all, if you go through the effort to the the iPhone set up on the tmobile network you will be glad you spent the time.
